(Georgia Institute of Technology) A molecular-sized brush that looks like a shoe brush has properties with great potential for the materials industry and medicine, but polyelectrolyte brushes can be sensitive, and getting them to work right tricky. New research shows what can make them break down, but also what can get them to systematically recover.

(Worcester Polytechnic Institute) Researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and the University of Connecticut (UConn) are collaborating on a smartphone app aimed at helping users manage their overeating challenges. In addition to tracking stress and eating, SlipBuddy provides personalized interventions through a system built through the integration of behavioral strategies and technologies like machine learning and data mining. The app helps users identify what triggers them to overeat and inserts new stimuli that lead to healthy behaviors.

(Duke University) The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has elected three faculty members from Duke University's department of biomedical engineering to its 2017 class of Fellows: Joseph Izatt, the Michael J. Fitzpatrick Professor of Engineering; Nimmi Ramanujam, the Robert W. Carr, Jr. Professor of Biomedical Engineering and the director of the Global Women's Health Technologies Center; and Tuan Vo-Dinh, the Goodson Professor of Biomedical Engineering, professor of chemistry and the director of the Fitzpatrick Institute for Photonics.

(NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center) The Thomas fire, the fifth largest in California's history, continues to creep towards Montecito and Santa Barbara, and is currently 234,200 acres in size. That is about 4,200 acres larger than yesterday. Reports today are citing the fire at 20 percent containment per Inciweb.

(New Jersey Institute of Technology) Partners from government and industry joined the NJIT community to celebrate the opening of Makerspace at NJIT, a training-focused, rapid prototyping facility that is central to both the university's hands-on learning mission and its growing relationship with New Jersey's manufacturing community.
Toward a brighter economy and the workforce that will build it, NJIT opens Makerspace
(DOE/Sandia National Laboratories) Research at Sandia National Laboratories has identified a major obstacle to advancing solid-state lithium-ion battery performance in small electronics: the flow of lithium ions across battery interfaces.

(Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences) With revenue from college football at an unprecedented $3.4 billion annually, universities across the country invest millions each year in recruitment efforts for high school football players. But with talented players typically receiving multiple scholarship offers, team rosters are in limbo until student athletes commit to a university. However, a new study in the INFORMS journal Decision Analysis shares how social media can provide universities with valuable insight into the decision-making process of their recruits.

(University of Massachusetts Lowell) Nearly one in 50 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, usually before age 3, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the number of people trained to help them isn't keeping pace with the demand. But a UMass Lowell faculty researcher is out to change this with a 'virtual child' to help professionals learn key treatment techniques.

(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc./Genetic Engineering News) A nationwide study of school principals has shown that while the majority had assisted a victim of teen dating violence (TDV) recently, most of them had never received formal training in this area and their school did not have a specific protocol for dealing with TDV.
What role can schools play in preventing and responding to teen dating violence?
(Carnegie Mellon University) Carnegie Mellon University alumnus Glen de Vries, co-founder and president of Medidata, has donated $10 million to endow the chair of the dean of CMU's Mellon College of Science (MCS). The gift by de Vries, a 1994 graduate of the Mellon College of Science who helped create the leading cloud platform for life sciences research, will allow MCS Dean Rebecca Doerge and her successors to invest in fundamental sciences, in interdisciplinary initiatives, and in faculty and students.

(Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science) Researchers at Columbia Engineering, experts at manipulating matter at the nanoscale, have made an important breakthrough in physics and materials science, recently reported in Nature Nanotechnology. Working with colleagues from Princeton and Purdue Universities and Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, the team has engineered "artificial graphene"by recreating, for the first time, the electronic structure of graphene in a semiconductor device.
